April Birchbox

I usually like most--if not all--of the products in my Birchbox each month, but I'm sorry to say that I wasn't a fan of the April box at all. I thought a few of the items were repetitive and none of them were suited to me/my beauty profile. I appreciate that you featured Earth-friendly products this month, Birchbox, but you totally missed the mark. I hope that my May box is better. I only have two boxes left in my subscription, and I want to make them count!

The theme of this month's box was Natural Wonders.
First Impressions:
  • Benta Berry G-1 Exfoliating Facial Cleanser: I'm fairly picky about what I use on my face, and right now, I'm pretty faithful to Mary Kay. I miiiiiiight use this when I travel, but I feel like it will smell bad and be sticky, which are two things that I can't really handle. If I end up trying it, I'll be sure to share my review.
  • Pangea Organics Lip Balm: I really like lip products, so I was excited to get this in my box. Unfortunately, it was gritty and clumpy when I tried it out. I really wanted to like this product, but it was just bad.
  • Weleda Pomegranate Firming Day Cream: Since I have a huge phobia of having wrinkly lower eyelids when I'm older, I definitely will be trying this product. I don't really expect to love it enough to drop $33--or hard-earned Birchbox points--on a full-size bottle, but you never know.
  • Taylor Swift Wonderstruck: I just have to say that the packaging on Wonderstruck is quite possibly the prettiest packaging I've ever seen on a perfume. I love it! I like the scent enough to use the convenient sample-size tube when I travel, but I don't think I'll purchase a full-size bottle.
  • Pangea Organics Facial Scrub: Honestly, I don't think that this facial scrub sounds any better than the cleanser above. I think having a cleanser and scrub in the same box is repetitive, and Birchbox could have easily subbed this sample out for an Earth-friendly eye shadow or something.
  • Pangea Organics Eye Cream: I will give this product a try (see my comment above about eye wrinkles), but once again, I think it's repetitive to have this and a firming day cream in the same box. Just my opinion.
What did you get in your April Birchbox?

Know what feels pretty great?

Spending an afternoon eating Mexican food and drinking margs with one of your best friends

Driving by to see your future apartment just one more time before you move in

Seeing The Hunger Games with your boyfriend

Knowing that you and your boyfriend are on the same page when it comes to super annoying/rude people in movie theaters

Stuffing your face with pigs in blankets and hot chocolate during a late-night IHOP run

Receiving unexpected texts from people you love and don't get to talk to enough

Getting to sleep in on a Saturday morning

Spending two hours in a car with your best friend just chatting and laughing away

Being able to check in early at the hotel when you don't have a lot of time to get ready

Hearing your boyfriend tell you that you look hot in your dress while he looks pretty snazzy in his dress clothes and tie

Witnessing one of your best friends marry the man of her dreams and look absolutely beautiful while doing so

Crossing the border between Kansas and Missouri several times in one day

Celebrating with your beautiful sorority sisters

Dancing the night away to "Call Me Maybe"

Meeting a crazy old lady who is an absolute hoot

Making plans with your friends for just a few weeks from now

Having countless people tell you how excited and happy they are for you

Wishing you could linger just a little bit longer

Jumping into a huge, fluffy, comfy hotel bed

Sleeping in on a Sunday morning and eating complimentary breakfast at the hotel

Knowing that this is the last time you'll ever have to say goodbye to your boyfriend as he drops you off at the airport

Laughing at the adorable husky puppy on your flight

Catching up with your best friend who is busy perfecting her role as a mama

Realizing how much you'll miss your family when you move in less than two weeks

Wrapping your head around the fact that you're moving in less than two weeks

These are just a few of the things that made me smile this past weekend. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Jamour! I'm so happy I could share your special day with you.

Less than 3 Weeks and LOTS to Do

Things might be a little quiet on these here blog parts for the next few weeks. Between wrapping things up at work, traveling to Kansas City this weekend for a dear friend/sorority sister's wedding, soaking up the last few moments with my family, packing, and moving, I'm a busy girl!

I'll try to post when I can, but I'm not making any promises. Hopefully, I'll come up for air at some point before May 5, but if not, Columbia, here I come!

Also, what she said.

Weakness

Even when you've had a big lunch, and even when you're making EVERY effort to eat as healthy as possible, you can't say no to a free ah-maz-ing looking cupcake, right? Right. Glad we're on the same page.

My bosses brought in cupcakes the other day from Susie's Sweet Boutique in Roanoke, Texas. This little sweet shop is just down the street from my office, but I've never been in there. After tasting one of their cupcakes, however, stopping in before I leave town is definitely on my to-do list!

Now, on to the cupcake!

Complete deliciousness--and the best leftover birthday napkin ever if I do say so myself!
I have a total chocolate/peanut butter weakness. There's just something about that combination that literally makes me weak in the knees. It's my one and only (ha!) vice! Sooooo when I found out that there was a chocolate/peanut butter cupcake in the box, I may or may not have called dibs.

And that little cupcake did not disappoint! The cake was chocolatey, but not too sweet, and the frosting was the perfect blend of cream cheese and peanut butter. The piece of peanut butter cup on top was a delicious touch! The best part, however, was on the inside.

Three words: peanut butter filling. Pretty sure I died and went to cupcake heaven.

I was told that the Mississippi Mud and Red Velvet cupcakes were "pretty freaking awesome," as well.

Ah, the work of a cupcake blogger is never done!

Next time you're in Roanoke, stop in at Susie's Sweet Boutique!

April Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
is a dark, warm, windy night.

I am thinking...
about allllll of the things I have to get done in the next three weeks.

I am thankful...
for a helpful family.

In the kitchen...
a yummy taco salad for dinner!

I am wearing...
black Aerie yoga pants and a coral tank top that says "happy makes the world go 'round." Thursdays = yoga/Zumba clothes!

I am creating...
mental pictures about how I want to decorate my new apartment. Let's just hope Goodwill, Craigslist, and various thrift stores cooperate!

I am going...
to Kansas City next weekend to celebrate the marriage of one of my best friends/sorority sisters!

I am wondering...
how I'm going to fit all of my stuff into my roller skate of a car when I move. Proooooobably not going to happen, but I'm sure going to try.

I am reading...
nothing. I started Mockingjay, but didn't get very far because I'm just too busy at the moment. I'll pick it back up as soon as things calm down a little bit.

I am hoping...
that the next month goes smoothly!

I am looking forward to...
seeing The Hunger Games with Boyfriend next weekend! About time!

I am learning...
that everything happens for a reason.

Around the house...
is a wreck--well, my room is, specifically. Moving makes you realize how much CRAP you've accumulated over the years!

I am pondering...
what my next professional move will be.

A favorite quote for today...
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"- Mary Oliver

One of my favorite things...
is the fantastic just-finished-a-good-workout feeling.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
work tomorrow, packing, getting ahead with work for when I'm out of town next Friday, dinner with the best friends, more packing!

A peek into my day...
Got this text/photo last night. Remember my best friend's baby shower last month? Well, Baby Girl Emma arrived on Monday night, and I can't wait to kiss her BEAUTIFUL little face! :)
Hi, Aunt Sara! I can't wait to meet you!

Four Weeks from Right Now...

...I'll be unpacking my new apartment.

That's right, I finally figured out a little direction, and I'll be moving to Columbia, Missouri on Saturday, May 5!

Boyfriend and I got a great apartment, and we can't wait to start this new chapter of our lives. If you haven't caught on yet, this means the end of our long distance days once and for all! :)

In the meantime, I'm enjoying every second of my last few weeks in Dallas with my family, trying to figure out what's staying and what's going (and how I'm going to get it there), and doing all of the necessary pre-moving type things.

Furniture? Not yet. Job? Nope. But I know it will be an adventure, and I can't wait.

Also, I can't hide that I'm a little really excited to blog about all of my thrifting, Craigslisting, garage salesing, and decorating adventures as we attempt to turn an empty (but awesome) apartment into a home. And that includes me learning how to cook. Things are about to get messy. Stay tuned!

B is for Button

I (somewhat) overhauled my blog a few weeks ago and, in the process, found out that I have absolutely NO skills when it comes to graphic design. My attempts at making a blog button were bad with a capital B. Check them out:

Thankfully, however, I have very talented and generous sorority sisters. In this case, I'm specifically talking about my forever-fabulous Phi Mu sister Katie of LiveOriginally, which happens to be one of the prettiest little blogs around. Katie volunteered to make a blog button for me because she wanted the practice. Such a doll, right?!

After a few emails back and forth, Katie totally created the image I had in mind--something simple, classic, and girly that's neutral and timeless enough to use for a long time with a variety of blog designs. She was even kind enough to make a few variations of the button in case I want to change things up in the future.

I LOVE them!

Thank you SO much, Katie! I love them, and I think the sparkly one looks pretty fabulous on my blog--although I can't wait to use them all! As for the rest of you, you're MORE than welcome to grab a button from over on the right while you're here! :)

Katie will have her own button on What's On My Mind... very soon. In the meantime, go on over to LiveOriginally (you'll be happy you did) and show Katie a little love!

Cleanse Confession

I have a confession to make. I started my cleanse last Monday super excited to do something good for my body, and I did do well. Kind of.

Just a little background: I did the Advocare Well Herbal Cleanse after one of my coworkers decided to do it and told me about it. The cleanse itself is pretty simple. It lasts for ten days total, and all you have to do is eat healthy (lots of fruits, veggies, and fresh food), drink a fiber shake, and take herbal cleanse tablets and probiotic tablets. On days one through three and days seven through ten, I drank a fiber shake in the morning and then ate a healthy snack (usually an apple with some peanut butter or some Greek yogurt with blueberries or blackberries) and drank a bunch of water right afterwards. On days one through six, I took two herbal cleanse tablets before bed. On days four through ten, I took two probiotic tablets about an hour before my first meal and/or the fiber shake. Like I said, pretty simple.

Last week, I did really well. Sure, there were a few meals that could have been a little fresher and more veggie-packed, but I totally cut out sweets and unhealthy snacking, and I only drank water. Most of my meals consisted of chicken breast or fish, rice, and veggies. Not too bad if I do say so myself!

I chose to get the citrus-flavored fiber shake, and getting those down every morning was a challenge. Sorry to be graphic, but the citrus shakes resemble vomit in about every way possible. I strongly recommend getting the peaches and cream flavor if you decide to do this cleanse. My coworker says it's delicious--so glad I know that now. Like with most cleanses, drinking a lot of water was a must. I've been trying to drink more water anyway, but I found myself constantly thirsty throughout the cleanse. Not a bad thing, just a word of warning.

I have to say that I felt awful on day three of the cleanse. Thanks to my body detoxing, I had no energy, had a headache all day, and literally felt like I'd been hit by a truck (or was really hungover minus the nausea). By the next day, though, I felt fantastic--full of energy, in a good mood, and just generally healthy! I can't say for sure if I lost any weight--I'm not a big believer in scales--but I do feel like I lost a few pounds. That may have more to do with all of the yoga and Zumba I've been doing, though.

So here comes the confession: I cheated a little on my cleanse this weekend. It wasn't too bad--just a couple of glasses of wine and a scoop of ice cream--but it totally threw me off. When it was time to start drinking the shake again on Monday morning, I had a really difficult time getting it down. To make matters worse, I fell asleep early on Monday night before I took the herbal tablets. I managed to chug the shake on Tuesday morning and take the supplements as directed, but I left my shake and probiotic tablets--the last ones of the entire cleanse--at home yesterday morning. I guess I could finish today or tomorrow, but I feel like the effort might be too little too late.

I'm very proud of how I did last week, but I'm disappointed that I couldn't stick with it for the full ten days. You best believe, however, that I'll be trying this cleanse again. Advocare recommends doing the cleanse every three months, so I plan on doing it when I get home from vacation in July.

Have you ever done a cleanse? Tell me about it!
